CHL not recognized by bank as valid ID?

If this incident happened to me and I am a regular customer and in the bank a lot I would be looking for another more customer friendly bank. My best banking experiences have always been with small local banks.

I obtained a library card using my CHL as I.D. They required two forms of photo I.D.

In this instance, the clerk wasn't certain if it was an adequate form of I.D. and sought assurance from her boss.

Her boss stated that she'd accepted such before as they are state issued...

1. They wouldn't care. Having been in that former position-if you made a stink about this then they would think: good riddance.

Be very very happy you were not "helpfully interviewed" by ten or so police officers, responding to a bank robbery.

Having worked in a branch, bank employees are a bit jumpy in that regard. A bank teller could have easily thought that was a holdup.

What complete and utter nonsense. It is this kind of attitude that has lead to this sorry condition we are in today.

Carrying a gun (not just a little ID card) should be the default, EXPECTED situation of every person that walks into a bank (or anywhere else). It is that attitude that we need to hide and cower in fear that gives the antis the encouragement they need to harass us at every opportunity.

Respectfully, thats not an especially good idea. There's right, then there's dead right. Banks are special circumstances.

I remembered that a several years ago Texas changed the law to include the CHLs as IDs. What I found was this website:

Hear is the reason, loosely quoted from chase policy. I have posted before that I am a banker, one can only assume why this may or may not be correct.

Chase is a national bank. They have a national policy. They have a list of approved ID’s, and may not deviate from list. This list has not really been updated in quite some time. CHL is not on this list, for 2 reasons. A. has not been updated. B. the policy specifically excludes a firearm “permit”. In other states a permit is the equivalent of a library card, only indicates that you have not lost privileges… not that you are who you say you are, and they are easily duplicated. Same reason why they don’t accept a SS card.

So, CHL is not excluded so much as not (yet) included. One (me) can make the argument the a CHL is a Gov issued and not a “permit” so (hypothetically) I would take them on sill stuff, but not loan doc’s ect… it would take an individual who A) wants to find a solution for the client and B) understands the difference in a license and a permit.

I’ll also note that if I was at any point associated with said bank, I terminated my employment on 1/15/09 (hypothetically of course)

Please note that on this chart, the CHL is not even considered a secondary ID, but is a supporting document. Compare it for validity to the other supporting documents, such as a vehicle title or a prison inmate ID (another state issued photo ID). That shows how much faith DPS has in the CHL as an ID card.

But a better way to see that a CHL is not a valid id is to read the actual law. The Government Code says (Section 411.205):

DISPLAYING LICENSE; PENALTY. (a) If a license holder is carrying a handgun on or about the license holder's person when a magistrate or a peace officer demands that the license holder display identification, the license holder shall display both the license holder's driver's license or identification certificate issued by the department and the license holder's handgun license.

From this you can see that the legislature did not consider the CHL to be an ID. If they had, you could just show the CHL in response to a demand for ID from a peace officer.

In the Alcoholic Beverage Code, Section 106.03 gives a defense to a charge of selling alcoholic beverages to a minor if the minor uses either of two very specific forms of ID. They are the Texas DL and DPS issued ID card. Nothing else counts as a valid ID there, even other state's DL's.

Since the legislature does not count a CHL as ID, it si reasonable to assume other people will not either.

When I was still living in Texas my (at the time) wife to be went to the court house after I got off of work one day to get our marriage license. I had left my DL at the house and all I had on me was my CHL. So I presented the clerk the CHL and on our marriage license is her DL number and my CHL number. If the Nacogdoches County courthouse will take then there is no reason a bank shouldn't.

This may be about to change there are 2 bills filled on voter ID that would allow a CHL to be used as acceptable ID
