1962 - The ironclad CSS Virginia, formerly the USS Merrimack, steamed on her first voyage after refitting. She sank one Union ship and badly damaged another by ramming them in Hampton Roads. This battle took place one day before her famous encounter with the USS Monitor.

1917 - The Russian revolution began on what was then February 23 on the Julian calendar.

1965 - The first large contingent of U.S. combat troops -- 3,500 Marines -- arrived in Da Nang, Vietnam. This is one of several dates in late 1964 and early 1965 that can be marked as the beginning of major U.S. involvement in 'Nam.
