Coming To America: Trouble

Post by casingpoint »

hundreds or perhaps thousands of middle-class Mexicans seeking asylum at U.S. ports of entry across from Mexican border towns where violent gunbattles have raged
Flight from the drug inspired violence in Mexico has begun for the wealthy who can afford to take the easy track. Next, poor Mexicans may be coming across the border in droves, disrupting American cities and towns, straining all social services, the police, everybody.

The U.S. military is currently on alert if civil unrest spills north of the Mexican border. But is it prepared to humanely handle an influx of refugees on the order of magnitude that could occur?

I was talking with my wife on ways to get her mom and sister out of Mexico City when the government falls. One thing that dawned both of is is that since the government is already the biggest mafia down there due to the blatant corruption, having the government fall could possibly be a plus.

We were trying to figure out what would change? The government is in the way in almost every facet of life down there that they really probably wouldn't be missed at all.

I know I'm being simplistic but having the Mexican government go away might be a plus if not a solid break even.

For one thing, the citizens would then be able to at least arm themselves and would have the opportunity to stop being sheep.

At least if the US has to send in troops it won't be against the Mexican govt.because there won't be one and everyone hates drug runners.

(edited because I can't type worth anything on my Black Berry.)

TDDude, did you have to open that can of worms??? If the government of Mexico fails, one option is for the U.S. to invade and conquer Mexico and make it the 51st state. Good Lord, Ross Perot never heard such a giant sucking sound as that would cause.

That may be one way to look at it but if we did "invade" to get rid of the drug mafias, then I seriously doubt it would become the 51st state. We put in a government friendly to US interests and let them take care of themselves. This country has a history of conquering and giving back. I wouldn't put it past the current administration to deal with it by making a deal with the drug gangs that makes them the "government". I don't agree with that but I wouldn't be surprised if it gets spun that way.

BUT, when the government down there does fail, it's something this country will have to come to grips with.

But what do I know? I'm just a dude you know??

That's a good analysis of the way we (The Federals) deal with problems outside of our borders. If we haven't installed the bad guys in power positions, we at least support them (Hamas in Gaza, etc.). The only glitch would be: which cartel would we use to rule Mexico. The Gulf Cartel? The Sonora Cartel?
