1933 - President Franklin D. Roosevelt delivered the first of his radio "fireside chats."

Until that time, most Americans never saw the president or heard his voice. Presidents were reserved, outside of campaign season. Their speeches were not printed verbatim.

FDR delivered 31 fireside chats, establishing a tradition that continues to this day with the president's weekly radio address.

1938 - German troops invaded Austria in an event known as the Anschluss. Austria collapsed like a spoiled soufflé.

1947 - President Truman declared the the U.S. would not allow another country to be forcibly taken over by communists -- a very real possibility in Greece and Turkey at that time.
