1638 - Puritan leaders expelled Anne Hutchinson from the Massachusetts Bay Colony for preaching doctrines contrary to their beliefs.

This early episode contributed to centuries-long disagreements about the roles of religion and government, which are not yet fully settled.

1765 - The British Government passed the Stamp Act, which was to go into effect November 1. See This day in history - November 1.

1933 - President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed a bill allowing production of wine and beer and beer with up to 3.2% alcohol. It was less than a month into his first term. This law partially fulfilled one of his campaign promises -- to end Prohibition.

1963 - The Beatles' first album, "Please Please Me," was released in Great Britain.

1968 - Gen. William Westmoreland became Army Chief of Staff at the height of the Vietnam War.

1972 - Congress passed the Equal Rights Amendment, which was intended to outlaw sex discrimination. Highly controversial, it expired without being ratified by enough states.
