This day in history - March 24

1765 - The British Parliament enacted the Quartering Act, which required the American colonies to provide housing and supplies for British troops on American soil.

This provision was expensive for the colonies. Their governments and citizens saw no reason for quartering large numbers of troops in peace time.

Along with the Stamp Act of the same year, it contributed to the outrage that began brewing the American Revolution.

The attention paid in this law to alcoholic beverages for soldiers is bizarre by our standards.
