We're already there.
Labor's power is 1/3 of what it was back then
Farmers happily take the state's money in return for being told what to grow or what not to grow.
First Amendment Zones are commonplace.
We're being turned against each other. (Called anyone a right wing wacko/left wing loon lately? Automatically distrust someone because of their beliefs?)
We've already swallowed the ism.

Re: Why "ism" is bad for America
Others may not agree, but I personally think that part of the problem is that we tried so hard, for so long, to ensure that the rest of the world shared in our freedoms and benefits and much of that world has taken full advantage of the freedoms we propogated to them without taking on the resposibilities inherent.
And we not only let them, we encouraged them, and forgave their many errors and omissions, and even contribute our own money to resuscitate them when they failed in try after try, or when they just plain swindled us.
I still think the Monroe Doctrine was a better idea than the Marshall plan, but I guess that's kind of obvious.
