HGCA Gun Show this weekend - Going to Buy an AR15

I've decided that I NEED / MUST HAVE / CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT an AR-15. Which one should I get and what should I pay for it?

Depends on how many goodies come with it, somewhere between 750-900 I would think for a new one.

Bushmaster, DPMS, Armalite, Rock River Arms are all good. Olympic gets mixed reviews from what I read and Colt is said to be insanely overpriced.

Just what I gather from reading forums all the time. :)

I like my Bushmaster, but I am biased in that it is also the only one that I have owned/shot. It also came to me by way of a good deal from a friend that wanted to sell it to get another one really fast.

Pick your poison. You can't go wrong with any of the major makers. Like dolanp, Olympic seems to be hit or miss from what I've read on other forums. To be fair though most that I see trashing the Olympic are people that seem to think Bushmaster and Colt shoud be making ARs.

I have seen a lot of AR's of several makes and models in my classes. We fire 500-600 rounds in a two day period. One of our officers has had two problems with his Olympic Arms. The bolt carrier cracked at one point, and the firing pin broke on a seperate occasion.

I have a Rock River Arms and have been through Thunder Ranch with it, through CRTC's Urban Tac. Rifle Instructor Class, DEA Rifle School, and I have used it in at least five AR classes that I instructed. Never have I ever had a problem with my Rock River Arms. We have had very few problems with Bushmasters as well. I can think of only one problem we have ever had.

The RRA is hard to beat as far as quality for the price.

I have a Bushmaster and a Rock River Arms and I am all about the RRA's.

...a little over 5 years now...

I have about 3 cases of ammo through it...And Zero problems...

I know that sounds like a light load through it so far, but I am comfortable with the functionality, the maintainability of the rifle so far...I don't see any appreciable problems in the future that I am not prepared to handle at my level of expertise on the weapon...

Other than making the "cosmetic" changes that I want to make to it, I am happy with it like it is...

I would recommend a Bushmaster, but I know that there are several makers out there that put out a good product as well...

My only recommendation would be to give yourself the flexability to add an optic package on there by getting a model that allows the removal of the, ahem, "handle"...That seems to be the draw these days...

I put an EoTech 511 on mine, and have shot several "CQB" type courses of fire with it...

I love the sound of falling "poppers" in the morning...Sounds like...Victory...

But...

What is the story on concealed carry while "in" the show???

I've been to a few others in Pasadena, and at the GRB...And those areas I am familiar with what they would like to have happen, but I am not sure about this Reliant venue...

To me its not a big deal...But I hate to feel like I have to disarm while at any gunshow...

You know I might just fly off the handle or something...\sarcasm mode

It will be posted with a proper 30.06 sign. Pocket knives with a blade up tp 4.5" and OC are not prohibited.

It's my understanding that it's not a problem having a gun at the show (practically everybodies got em), just a loaded gun.

Charles help me out on this if I'm wrong, but I don't see how you could be prosecuted for carrying concealed.

Texas law makes not distinction between loaded and unloaded guns. If it is illegal to carry a loaded gun, than it would be illegal to carry one unloaded as well. If it is legal to carry unloaded, then it would be legal to carry loaded. (That is just my opinion.)

Besides, I think we have covered the part about the buildings being owned and/or leased by a governmental entity.

You are correct on all points. Since the gun show will be in a city/county owned building, 30.06 signs should be unenforceable. However, as discussed in other threads, some cities, including Houston, are taking the position that they are leasing the facility to a private party who has the right to post a 30.06 sign. It's my professional opinion that argument is invalid, but it'll take a test case to prove me right or wrong.

As a side note, I have been told that insurance companies are requiring gun show promoters to prohibit loaded guns, in order to get insurance coverage all building owners require to rent the property. This is probably why we are seeing 30.06 signs. This insurance requirement has nothing to do with the enforceability of the 30.06 signs.

It's not that insurance companies are inherently evil, it's that our society is so litigious, and there is no overwhelming sense of personal responsibilty or accountability, SO SUE SOMEONE!!!!

The mentality in America has become one of "pay me, or i'll hire a scumbag lawyer to extort you and run up defense costs"! This being the case, Insurance companies have begun to take fortifying positions against the lawsuit-mongering scumbag plaintiffs and their enabling lawyers.
