1431 - St. Joan of Arc was burned at the stake in Rouen, France, after being convicted of a trumped-up charge of heresy.
A fascinating, complicated, and mysterious figure from a time when history is murky.
1539 - Hernando De Soto landed in Florida.*
His expedition explored (or wandered around, depending upon your point of view) southeastern North America, reaching Texas four years later. De Soto died of disease in 1542, in what is now Arkansas.
1868 - The first Memorial Day was commemorated, known at the time as Decoration Day.
1896 - The first recorded automobile collision occurred in New York City.
1911 - The first Indianapolis 500 was run.
1922 - The Lincoln Memorial was dedicated.
1989 - Demonstrators in Tiananmen Square in Beijing erected a statue that looked remarkably like the Statue of Liberty. Subsequent events were ugly, but we seem to have forgotten them.
*Dates from this period are disputable, but what difference does it make?

This day in history - May 30
Fear, anger, hatred, and greed. The devil's all-you-can-eat buffet.
Re: This day in history - May 30
Another remarkable day in history with many fascinating events. I remember the demonstrators in Tiananmen Square in Beijing...your right, you never hear of it anymore.
Jim, may I add one more on this day: 2000- George Bryan received a Heart Transplant at Dallas Medical City and is 9yrs old today

Re: This day in history - May 30
I have prayed for your continued good health.
As a general principle, I cut off "history" at 20 years. The JFK assassnation, the first moon landing, RFK, MLK, George Wallace, Watergate, those events don't seem so long ago. Something to ponder.

Thanks, Jim, so much for your prayers I appreciate them more than you will know in this life.
I very vividly can see where I was when the JFK assassination took place, as I am sure that anyone that was here during that time, can also.
Your right, it don't seem like it was that long ago. How quickly time passes....

Tempus Fugit!
I remember exactly where I was and who I was with when I learned of John Kennedy's death. Neither Varallo's in Belle Meade (west Nashville) nor my Dad are still here. That's going on a half century ago.

These postings do tend to remind us of events that once seemed so important.
We need to remember those who work so hard to crush freedom and never forget.
Thanks Jim.
