Students ostracized for advocating concealed carry on campus

Post by seamusTX »

I am listening to Tom Gresham's Gun Talk archive for May 31.

Last week and this week, Mr. Gresham talked about two women students who tried to organize chapters of Students for Concealed Carry on Campus at their state or community colleges. Both were treated as if they had tried to do something unholy and subjected to "discipline" normally reserved for those who commit crimes, cheat on tests, or the like.

These issues are all over the internets:

I had heard of Brashier before thru (I think) Instapundit and thence FIRE (http://thefire.org//" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;). Via the FIRE site I sent a (polite) complaint letter to her college administration.

Will go check out the other gal too.

It always irked me when Academics (and I use the term loosely) espouse the merits of free-thought and free-speech, but when you pin them down on the subject they really mean free-thought and free-speech that they agree with.

I can't get worked up about anything on related to campus groups (any groups or free speech issues on college).

I was always to busy working full time/going to school to worry about such nonsense. I had things to do and laughed about people who cared about such made up nonsense. :mad5

I personally would have to disagree. I cannot find myself supporting 2A rights while not worrying about 1A rights, regardless of the environment.

I can certainly understand and respect your viewpoint.

My viewpoint was/is that they should shut up and get their degree and get out. If they can talk they can get better grades or work :grumble .

aka Back In My Day (TM) we didn't have time to sit around and bellyache and wa wa, we had to work for a livin' after walking uphill through the rain and snow, both ways. "rlol" :smilelol5: :cheers2:

In a free, democratic society, you have the privilege of ignoring any such issue. That is exactly what the powers that be want you to do.

However, I find it offensive when colleges that are supported by taxpayer dollars have clubs devoted to nearly every topic that some people find offensive (e.g., "gender identity issues," erotica [a.k.a. pornography], "animal rights," and Satanism); but legal, armed self defense is untouchable.

Agreed, but see above. In an enlightened Frazzled Administration, no student would have time for such nonsense.

Except for :cheers2: of course. thats just required. :anamatedbanana

Perhaps I misunderstand. Are suggesting that any attempt to defend 1st amendment rights is "bellyaching and wa wa", or is it only when college students try to defend it?

Many of us (perhaps yourself included) just spent significant effort to support SCCC and campus carry. Are you suggesting that this organization (SCCC) should not exist as it is a waste of student's time?

I think you're missing the plethora of smilies there. I'm saying if they applied themselves and studied more/worked more then they would be too tired for free speech to begin with and all they would want to do is sleep :yawn

On a more serious note. I'm all for CCL on campus and been in enough city colleges in high crime areas that this is positively required.
But I'm completely unbothered about the so called free speech needs of adolescents on campus. If they don't like it-get a job and quit sucking up pop's checkbook! :reddevil :evil2:

Have you ever heard the saying, "When you find yourself in a hole, the first thing to do is stop digging"?

Many college students are mature adults who pay their own tuition, or have Uncle Sam helping because they put their life on the line in service to their country.

Many college students carry a full course load, maintain a 4.0 GPA, play a varsity sport or two, tutor grade-school or high-school children at night, and volunteer at charities on weekends. I don't know how they do it, but more power to them.

You're completely correct. As did I.
But they are either too busy to worry about whatever group/free speech issue is at the particular moment or are big boys and can handle it themselves.

As the Immortal Bard once said, 'the concerns of college students are about #4587 on my list of priorities.' Its much ado about nothing to me.

Well yea, as noted you need time for this too of course :cheers2:

As stated earlier I can completely understand other's views on this. I'm just too tired and the weekend is too far off :totap:

Honestly I'm shocked by this statement. I don't think anyone is saying the country should get up in arms and race to her defense, but to simply dismiss the incident because she is in college and should be "working harder" really doesn't make any sense. What is it exactly that differentiates a college student from any other person in the 18-25 age group (approximate college age)? Does attending college somehow invalidate the rights protected by the 1st amendment? I can agree that their priorities may not by your priorities (or mine), but considering this issue was about campus carry, I would have thought it might fall at least somewhere close to the top of the list.
