1775 - The Battle of Bunker Hill was fought. Although the British achieved their objective, they had over 1,000 caualties, versus abouot 450 Americans.

The magnitude of British losses led British General Henry Clinton to write in his diary, "A few more such victories would have shortly put an end to British dominion in America."

1972 - Burglars were arrested after breaking into the Democratic campaign headquarters in the Watergate complex, the first pebble in the avalanche that ended with the downfall of President Richard Nixon.
