All that said, if no one is in immediate danger, and you can resolve a situation without the use of force, it is better to do so. Confrontations are always a gamble, regardless of how well armed either side is. Otherwise all police officers would retire unscathed.

The Annoyed Man:
In the scenario that I laid out, although I described the man as
a "potential robber", what I meant was a guy who had the mean eyes
going and was approaching in a menacing manner. A robber that I wanted
to deter from completing his mission, as it were.
But my action of drawing down on him was not as good as the plan of
action that you laid out. Thanks for a more nuanced approach. My hand
on my gun in its concealed holster is not half as threatening as actually completing
the draw.
