622 - The Islamic calender began with the first day of the first month of the year 1 AH.

1769 - Father Junipero Serra founded Mission San Diego, the first Spanish-Mexican mission in California.

1790 - The future site of Washington, D.C., was staked out.

1918 - Czar Nicholas II of Russia and his family were executed.

1935 - The first modern parking meter was installed in Oklahoma City.

1945 - The first atomic bomb was exploded in a test code-named Trinity, in the desert in New Mexico.

1951 - J.D. Salinger's obscene, profane novel The Catcher in the Rye was published.

1954 - The first Boeing 707 prototype flew.

1957 - John Glenn set a transcontinental speed record, flying a jet from California to New York in less than 3 1/2 hours.

1964 - In a speech after being nominated the Republican presidential candidate, Barry Goldwater said "extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice ... moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue."

1969 - Apollo 11 blasted off from Cape Kennedy on the first moon landing mission.

Though it is history now, it was a nail-biter at the time.
