This day in history - July 21

Post by seamusTX »

1861 - The first Battle of Manassas or Bull Run ended in a Union rout, leading some to think that the war would be wrapped up quickly in favor of the C.S.A.

1873 - Jesse James and the Younger gang pulled off their first train robbery.

1930 - Pres. Herbert Hoover established the Veterans Administration by executive order.

Veterans' benefits or lack thereof had been a source of unrest in the early years of the Great Depression: http://www1.va.gov/opa/feature/history/history3.asp" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

1944 - The amphibious invasion of Guam began.

1959 - NS Savannah, the first nuclear-powered merchant ship, was launched.

Only four such ships were built. The economics of nuclear-powered civilian ships did not work out.

1961 - Capt. Virgil "Gus" Grissom became the second American in space, aboard Liberty Bell 7. The capsule sank after splashdown, leaving Capt. Grissom floating in the ocean. The sequence of events has been the subject of debate for decades.

1976 - The first outbreak of what came to be called "Legionnaires' Disease" caused 29 deaths among attendees of an American Legion reunion in Philadelphia.

and it's been the central diagnostic plot point in every episode of House, M.D. ever since...
FWIW, IIRC, AFAIK, FTMP, IANAL. YMMV.
