1866 - Ulysses S. Grant was named to the newly created rank of General of the Army of the United States, the equivalent of a modern 5-star general.

1868 - Congress passed an act creating the Wyoming Territory.

1898 - U.S. forces occupied Puerto Rico during the Spanish-American War.

1909 - Louis Bleriot made the first airplane flight across the English Channel, winning a £1000 prize.

1944 - A Messerschmitt Me 262 became the first jet-fighter to see action in wartime.

1952 - Puerto Rico achieved the commonwealth status that it has today.

1978 - Louise Brown, the first baby conceived by in-vitro fertilization and brought to term, was born in England. Called a "test-tube" baby at the time, ominous predictions of the coming of Aldous Huxley's Brave New World, etc., were rampant. :yawn
