Nitrogen,
I'm not terribly sensitive or on the lookout to qualify for sport complaining as the PC crowd is so fond of doing...
If you want, I'll PM you the message as best I remember it.
Of course, if you believe anything can be verbalized or written on clothing for the public at large to see wherever you go without regard to what's expressed, perhaps you won't be interested.
There are some limitations on free speech that are grounded in common sense i.e., you can't yell "FIRE" in a crowded theatre.
The wearing of I saw could incite some pretty severe repercussions. All it did for me is cause contempt, disgust and wonder what sort of person would wear such a thing. I guess the list is extensive: The mentally disturbed, narcissistic attention need, looking for a fight, low I.Q. and we could guess until ...?

Actually, there are currently very few laws on prior restraint. It is perfectly legal to yell "Fire!" in a crowded theater. The thing that'll get you in trouble is inciting a riot or public disturbance.
No law will prevent your speech (yelling FIRE!) but there are laws that will deal with the consequences of said speech. (a riot, injury, time and materials of the FD for responding, for instance) which is the way it should be.
The conversation we're having now goes very differently when it comes to topics like prayer anywhere near a public school, or speech about guns and self defense.
If you feel that upset by it (and who knows, I might agree once I see your PM!) handling it the way you did is the best way to do so.
I'm a pretty libertarian person when it comes to civil rights. I'd probably just take a couple cameraphone pictures of the idiot and have fun with him on twitter or other websites.

I agree. I don't like offensive things, but for those of you worried about what your child sees on a t shirt, have you monitored what they watch on TV lately? There is a lot of indecency out there. It is up to us as to how we teach our kids to react to it and handle it. As for wearing an indecent shirt, rest assured he's guaranteeing himself a minimum wage job and go on with life.nitrogen wrote:Then what do we do when a majority others think that speaking about guns or God is something THEY don't want THEIR 10 year old daughters to hear? That almost happened and could happen again.
Thats' why we have freedom of speech, to protect ALL speech. We never know when our speech might become unpopular or "offensive".
Thats why I'll always stick up for any idiot's right to be an idiot, no matter how offensive it might be to me personally, and why you should, too.

For another take on this: As a CHL holder, I would be hesitant to confront someone about how "offensive" their shirt is to me, because if they're having a bad day and start a fight over it, seems to me I escalated a situation which didn't need escalation.
This is why when I see "Obama" shirts, I just roll my eyes and move on....

Maybe we can compromise and have reasonable restrictions like making people take a 10 hour class and pay $140 and submit to a background check before they're allowed to speak in public.nitrogen wrote:Then what do we do when a majority others think that speaking about guns or God is something THEY don't want THEIR 10 year old daughters to hear? As far as offensive, I was once told that the following shirt was offensive, and was asked to leave somewhere:

well, generally the children can see for themselves exactly what type of person wears that shirt. I know 90% of the time I've seen an offensive shirt its been on some lowlife who would prob. scare the kid to death rather than make the kid want to grow up and be exactly like him.
I still wish private stores would ban obsene clothing. No Shirt. No Shoes. No Taste. No Service.

They were offended by the "daemon" i.e. "making the devil look cute" so, you never know.TexasComputerDude wrote:nitrogen wrote:As far as offensive, I was once told that the following shirt was offensive, and was asked to leave somewhere:

Pretty much anything can offend anyone if you look hard enough, I guess.

I have a "God gave us Linux to run web servers" shirt that I may want to keep in the closet going forward...

...which is exactly why I said that, at worst (meaning if the guy doesn't get it when you speak with him), then it can still be a teachable moment for your children.TexasComputerDude wrote:USA1 wrote: how is a parent going to explain to their young child who sees the f bomb on a t-shirt
