Federal Hi-Shok 2??

Federal Hi-Shok 2??
Anyone ever heard of it? I found some online at a place called Streicher's Police Equipment for $15 for a box of 50 (.40 S&W 165 gr). I've never heard of it, but the bullet looks very similar to the one used in the Ranger T Series ammo. You can see the link HERE
Thoughts?? It seems like a GREAT price but I know nothing about the ammo. They seem to have good prices though....selling the normal Hydra-Shok for $18 for a box of 50 and Speer Gold Dot .40 S&W 165 gr. for the same price (box of 50).
They also have Federal "Tactical" ammo, which I've never heard of but they seem to think it's better than the other Federal HP's (although it appears they will only sale this ammo to law enforcement).

HST is the successor to Hydra Shock - - - supposed to be good stuff. Works well in gelatin not much street info yet. I'd carry it if it runs well in my gun.

I'm just wondering how it compares to Speer Gold Dot and Ranger T Series. I know the Gold Dot will do well in my gun because I'm currently using Double Tap Gold Dot (same bullet Speer uses only faster). I guess when it comes down to it though, any name brand JHP should do it's job.
It also seems odd to me that the Hi-Shok 2 would be cheaper than the Hydra-Shok (assumint the HST is supposed to be better).

The first generation HST supposedly performed well in bare gel but expansion suffered due to the cavity plugging in IWBA clothing and the 4 layer denim test. The newest generation reportedly has overcome those problems.
FWIW, I'm sticking to my chosen load of Ranger T, 165 or 180 grain in 40S&W, and 147 gr. in 9mm, and practice.
Lots of practice. :)

I used to get caught up in what brand pistol bullet to carry. I was looking for the latest and greatest, or what looked best in an ammo test, etc... The more I learned about rifles, the more I realized pistol bullets suck, no matter how good they are.
The main thing for a pistol bullet is that it works in your gun everytime. I think any brand name JHP that runs in your gun is the key. Now that I have to carry what the dept. dictates, I get to practice with what I carry and I am able to get familiar with the load I am carrying instead of changing all the time.

Everything you wanted to say, but were afraid to...Baytown wrote:The more I learned about rifles, the more I realized pistol bullets suck, no matter how good they are.

Glenn, ya have no fear!

You are right, but my Dad may dissagree with you...Him and Gordon Rysavy used to clean up in Pistol shilloette (echhh spelling!) in the 80's and early 90's at PSC, State and National matches...
He reloaded his stuff BTW...

I agree, but since it's kind of hard to conceal a rifle then I'll stick with pistols for now. ;)Baytown wrote:I used to get caught up in what brand pistol bullet to carry. The ability to feed reliably in your gun....along with shot placement....are definitely the two most important things. That said, if you KNOW that one round is proven to work better than another then it just makes good sense to use it. :)

Not trying to over-think this here, but what is "works better". How would one know? What measure does one use? Do you worry about 93% O-S-S, compared to 91% O-S-S's?
I think all major brands work, and work just as well as each other.
It is kind of the .45 vs 9mm argument.

By the way, how many of us here pick a pistol when we don't have to conceal it. (Ex.--Home defense/bedroom gun?) There are plenty of times when we choose a pistol over a rifle just because.

I don't know what "works better" is. I leave that to all the ballistic gurus and the folks that use them in the field to figure out. All I can do is read the reports on what they say and try to make an informed decision based on that.
I'd feel comfortable carrying any name brand JHP (and even some non-name brand ones like Double Tap...which is what I carry now), but if certain rounds, like the Speer Gold Dot for example, are believed to be more effective then it makes sense to use them (assuming your gun will shoot them reliably). I was simply wondering if anyone knew anything about the Federal HST because I had never heard of it before.
By the way, at only $18 per 50 round box, I bought a few boxes of Gold Dots from Streicher's. They seem to have pretty good prices on their ammo.
