Tyler: Gunsmith shoots self in hand

Post by seamusTX »

In Tyler, Tuesday, a gunsmith reportedly shot himself in the hand while showing a pistol to a customer.

The explanation sounds fishy to me.

"He forgot the clip was loaded, pulled back the slide to show the customer what he had fixed when the gun discharged shooting him through his hand," he said.
Apparently he didn't get it fixed! :shock: And he "forgot" that the magazine was loaded when he inserted it into the magazine well?? Uhhhh....I think I'd find me another gunsmith, with all due respect.

Wait.. the gun discharged with the slide pulled back?? :confused5

If he pulled back the slide, you'd think he'd see the round??? :confused5

Very fishy...

Maybe he fixed an issue with feeding/ejecting? That's the only reason I can think of that he'd be using live rounds to demonstrate the repair.

I wouldn't bank on the reporter accurately describing what happened.

What kind of handgun uses a clip?? This sounds like a strange firearm to me.
"He forgot the clip was loaded, pulled back the slide...the gun discharged...
If this quote is an accurate quote from Lt. Tony Dana then the Smith County sheriff's department needs to find a new Lt. There is no way that this happens. No mention of a trigger being pulled.

The reporting is junk! Forum rules and good taste prevent me from calling it what it actually is. The only thing in that blurb I would trust is that "a man was shot". All other details are suspect. Even the "man" part I would question.

Regardless;
This story reminds me of when I was a kid back home. Every single OLD carpenter I knew was missing at least a part of one finger. I didn't know any gunsmiths. Still don't.

Sooner or later, even a gunsmith will have an AD. This guys AD just happened to be a bit more painful than most. I wish him the best and a speedy recovery.

BTW, I'm still (not) waiting for my first AD. Well, I don't really count that time when I was 11 and shot the TV with my Marlin lever action .22. :). It takes a lot of mowed yards to pay for a picture tube when one is 11 years old.

I'm 50 now and my mom still reminds me of that day...... "Yes mom. I remember!!".
