1935 - Will Rogers and Wiley Post died in a plane crash near Point Barrow, Alaska.
1939 - "The Wizard of Oz" movie premiered.
1947 - India and Pakistan became independent.
This factoid would not immediately be relevant to U.S. history, but we have subsequently become involved in their political and economic affairs.
1969 - The Woodstock Music and Art Fair opened in upstate New York.
The "art" aspect has been pretty much forgotten.
1971 - President Nixon announced a 90-day freeze on wages, prices and rents.
The faltering economy was not helped a bit. Inflation continued to rage at levels that you younger folk can't imagine.
1973 - The Black September terrorist group launched an attack in the Athens airport that killed 3 and wounded 55 innocent people.
