Brit sniper sets new record long range kill.

A British sniper in Afganastan made a kill at 2 Km. That's 1800+ yards!!! Took him 2 shots though.

The dumbest thing about this is the man's picture, name, unit, hometown, and wife's name were published in the newspaper don't the Brits realize there are Talaban sympathizers in Britain?

Phew, with hits that far away, you can't even hear the report of the shot. That surely should be classified as psy ops.

I think the Brit's got a bit hopped up by a great shot. To my knowledge, this is the current record, held by CPL Rob Fulong, CDF;

"In 2002, Furlong participated in Operation Anaconda in Afghanistan's Shah-i-Kot Valley as a member of the 3rd Battalion of Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI). His sniper team included MCpl. Graham Ragsdale (Team Commander), MCpl. Tim McMeekin, MCpl. Arron Perry, and Cpl. Dennis Eason. A three-man al-Qaeda weapons team was moving into a mountainside position when Furlong took aim with his Long Range Sniper Weapon (LRSW), a .50-caliber McMillan Brothers Tac-50 rifle. He began firing at a fighter carrying an RPK machine gun. His first shot missed entirely, and his second shot hit the knapsack on the militant's back. The third struck the target's torso, killing him. The distance was measured as 2,430 metres (2,657 yd / 1.509 miles)."

Which surpassed the record shot by the "White Feather", Gunnery Sergeant Carlos Hathcock;

"The previous record was held by U.S. Marine sniper Carlos Hathcock in February 1967 during the Vietnam War, at a distance of more than 2,347 yards (2,146 m) using a scope-mounted Browning M2 .50 machine gun."

Two kilometers is 2,187.23 yards. The distance Corporal Reynolds hit at was 1853 meters, or about 2,026 yards. That's a heck of shot, no matter who you are. I have nothing but the utmost respect for the shooting abilities of snipers, but I think that not even most of them could have made that shot. There is only a small handful of people who are capable of hitting a target at 2,000 yards and beyond. If Corporal Reynolds was using the same Accuracy International as shown in the second picture, then the maximum caliber available for that rifle would have been a .338 Lapua Magnum. That cartridge is good at penetrating body armor past 1,000 yards, and is supposed to have a maximum effective range of about 1900 yards.... so hitting a target at 126 yards past the maximum effective range is quite a feat. Heck, even with a cartridge that will carry further like a .50 BMG or a Cheytac .408, it takes a very rare and special person to be able to make that kind of shot. People who can do that are few and far between.

Actually, Accuracy International also makes .50 BMG sniper rifles, but the rifle used for that shot was a .338 Lapua Magnum.

When considering shots in Afghanistan, it might be useful to remember that they are often made at altitudes well above sea level where the air is less dense. The area where Operation Anaconda took place was all above 8,000 feet, an altitude at which the air density is about 79 percent of what it is at sea level.

At those extreme distances, though, even in the thinner air, phenomena like spin drift, coriolis, and angles up or down make for difficult shooting. Good work by all.

Regardless, I agree with everyone that the article leaves more to the imagination as it took him more than ONE SHOT to kill the guy.
