Practice & Waiting Makes Perfect

This last Sunday, I wore my OWB holster (concealed of course) while shopping. I placed my cell phone in the holster to give it some weight. According to my wife, it concealed well, but she thought I was kind of nuts!

During this last month or so, I bought sufficient hot weather shirts that conceal really well. I'm wearing them to work just so people get use to my dress code change. I still need a good 1.5" belt and a smaller carry than the Sig 226.

I'm also using this "wait time" to read as much as I can, practice at least once a month (150 rounds), and dry fire about 2 times a week to include holster draws. I still need to find a quality and affordable tactical course in the DFW area.

Next month, I'm going to visit an area IDPA club event and see about joining, as another way to develop skills. I'm really looking forward to this part of the learning curve.

Now, I just need to figure out how to pay for all of this! But then I have plenty of time before I get the CHL to figure all of this out!

And so it goes.

Actually, given the long wait time, my little bit of messing around helps me feel like I am making some progress. And some of this is just to enjoy and learn from other gun owners and gun advocates who have already been down this road. For example, a morning at the gun range is just great fun. Hanging out in some of the local gun shops is an education in itself. And not suprising, I'm learning that I share many of the same feelings about "this & that" with many older gun owners. While a CHL has a very serious side, I'm finding this to be great fun too.

I too am in the dallas area. You should go out to the one of the IDPA shoots and skip the tactical course. Much more fun, laid back, and improves the basic skills you really need versus the overly tactical stuff.

Plus, its CHEAPER!

Hanging out in some of the local gun shops is an education in itself. And not suprising, I'm learning that I share many of the same feelings about "this & that" with many older gun owners.

+1 on practice and IDPA, but -1 on gun shop advice. I have heard employees and customers at local gun shops spout some of the worst "advice" that I have ever heard.

As for the 1.5" belt, I recommend the thebeltman.net. I recently purchased my second bullhide beltman belt in 1.25" because some of my dress pants have smaller loops. The prices might seem high compared to other belts, but they are made to last a long time. Their quality and workmanship is suberb. The only reason that you might have to buy another gun belt is if you want another finish/color, or you gain some weight.

150 rounds a month, where are you finding them, best I have been able to do is 200 rounds about 2 months ago still holding them until I can find some more to waste. I just find it hard to justify $50 a box just to send rounds down range. once I can find a steady supply of ammo I also want to join the IDPA sounds like it could be some fun and give me good excuse to use my gun which is collecting dust in my closet or night stand.

I just find it hard to justify $50 a box just to send rounds down range. once I can find a steady supply of ammo I also want to join the IDPA sounds like it could be some fun and give me good excuse to use my gun which is collecting dust in my closet or night stand.

For what's it worth, I'm shooting 9mm at $9.75 box from Walmart (Federal). If it was $50 a box ... glup ... that's another story.

Plus, that's a heck of a cell phone if it weighs anything close to the weight of even a small loaded gun. You might want to see if your plan provider will give you an upgrade to a newer, lighter phone.
