Stump Killer

I have a number of large stumps.

I've been removing them the old fashion way, that is, by hand.

This is tiresome to say the least.

Other than renting a stump grinder (and it may come to that) does anyone know if drilling holes into the stump and pouring in chemical stump killer a worthwhile effort?

If so: what do recommend and how deep should the holes be, etc.

P.S. the majority of the stumps are Chinese Tallow in the 20/30" or so diameter range.

I rented and used a stump grinder a few months ago. It was slower going than I had anticipated, but much less back-breaking. I ground up about 6 stumps between 1-2 feet in diameter in just a few hours.

I have never used chemicals, so I'm not sure of their effectiveness. However, I think you have to apply them and then just let them do their work over time. I don't knw what length of time that is, though.

That's a question worthy of Neil Sperry. I've heard from his show years back that chemical stump killers DO work, but they take several years and applications to do so.

Chemicals take awhile, many months I've been told - but eventually work. I think you still end up pulling a bunch out by hand in the end. I've never done it myself, but I used to gladly suggest the stump grinder when I worked at a tool rental! [note bias] I just don't like messing with chemicals. At least I don't live in california where they all cause cancer!

Most rentable stump grinders will only get down about 6 inches below ground and are a little expensive to rent.

I don’t know where you are or if it is feasible there to burn stumps. I have used a 55 gal. drum with the ends cut out for containing a fire, and burned them.

I've heard of drilling holes and pouring molasses into the holes. That attracts microbes and insects that destroy the stumps.

Well, to listen to some of the stories my dad-in-law tells, about when he was a kid back in the West Virginny hollers, blasting caps work pretty well.... at least until your grand-dad finds out you "borrowed" them from his shed without his permission.
