Denton: Probable murder & robbery, suspect at large

Post by seamusTX »

A 55-year-old woman was found shot to death at her home in the 2500 block of Kariba Lane in Denton about 10 p.m. Wednesday.

Her vehicle is missing. It is a 2007 Honda Fit with the Texas license plate 565-NGL.

this is in a rather "nice" area of Denton, just proving that old adage...

no forced entry, makes me wonder if it was someone she knew or something...
FWIW, IIRC, AFAIK, FTMP, IANAL. YMMV.

Either someone she knew or someone who got into the house on a ruse.

Most people will open the door for a stranger without question. It's all downhill from there.

The calling in sick to work aspect is a mystery. In most cases, someone failing to show up for work would not raise an alarm. The boss might try to call the person.

Most criminals work in their own "back yard," but occasionally one that still has a couple of functioning brain cells will go to a good neighborhood because there's better stuff to steal there.

The stolen vehicle was found abandoned. Police are now looking for an acquaintance of the deceased woman.

He is described as driving a 2001 Chevrolet pickup with Texas license plates 90K-YK9.

I am thinking "gun to her head" while making the phone call, especially since she called the 'wrong' person.

I find it odd that they give the pick up brand, year, and plate number...but no color. ??

This started out sounding like the Diane Tilly murder.

The suspect turned in himself.

But why let or make her use the phone at all?

Color is apparently not part of the vehicle registration record.

I would think nowadays that the license plate gives you the VIN, and the manufacturer could tell the color from that. Maybe the police just didn't get around to asking.

Man Admits To Murder Of Denton Woman

Police say a man has admitted he murdered a 55 year old Denton woman found dead in her home earlier this week. William Xu turned himself in at the Palmer police station last night. He'd been considered a person of interest in the case. Denton Police Captain Lenn Carter says the victim, Jennifer Maik, had called in sick to work Wednesday morning which was unusual for her. That very night, she was found dead from a gunshot wound.
Police say the suspect was a former co-worker and may have been upset over Maik's recent promotion.

Only speculation, but since he struck early in the morning and had her call in sick, maybe he was trying make sure no one called to see why she didn't come to work, and then came looking for her. Would give him a head start. Since she apparently called someone who would not normally take sick calls, maybe she was trying to telegraph that something was wrong. Dunno, but that's the only sense I can make out the call. I can't think of any other plausible reason.

The guy certainly was no criminal genius. Maybe he got his "plan" from the plot of a bad movie.

This incident shows that you can inadvertently create enemies just by doing a good job.
