help me choose holster(s) for a 1911

I just placed an order for a Dan Wesson CCO (a commander length 1911). I know, they're impossible to find, but I've got nothing but time to wait. In the meantime, I was looking at getting a good IWB and maybe an OWB holster for it as well.

For IWB my options are:
Crossbreed supertuck
Tucker "the answer" (with the new leather lining)
Tucker "silent thunder"
I have a crossbreed for my XD and one for my S&W 442. I also have a silent thunder for a compact 1911 (a heavy Rock Island). This new 1911 will be a lightweight model though. I expect to get holster wear on my gun, as it will be carried more often than shot. How does the answer compare to the supertuck and would anybody recommend the adding the option to line the kydex with leather? Or should i go completely leather lined and get a silent thunder? Does anybody use a silent thunder to carry a lightweight 1911? I'm sure the supertuck and 'answer" would be more stable, but if a single clip silent thunder gets the job done, then why not, right? Any opinions would be helpful.


My OWB options are choosing between a Tucker HF1 and a Tucker Pancake holster (might get some nice stamping on it as well, maybe even a new belt). I kind of wanted to get a nice OWB holster to carry my nice new 1911 whenever it comes in. I'm not a LEO of any kind, so this will be for when I'm wearing jackets in the winter and/or a sportcoat (I know, its a shame to have to conceal a beautiful holster). I've never carried OWB before and was wondering how much flatter the pancake holster lies against your body than the HF1. I was also wondering what difference it makes to have it cover the full length of the pistol or not. Or should I just get a Tucker belt slide holster? Any tips or advice would be great.

I sometimes carry a 5" Springfield in a Galco Concealable Belt Holster. It has the advantage of being constructed so as to best hug your body without the gun digging into your side (see "A" in image below). Also, all of the Galcos I've purchased (I own three) are built like tanks, of thick high quality leather, and they may well last a lifetime. By comparison, I also own a Desantis Speed Scabbard in which I carry a USP Compact, and the leather is not nearly as thick, although it did cost significantly less. It seems to be well made, it is also patterned more like "A" in the image below, but one doesn't get the impression that it will last forever, like you do with the Galco. I only bought it because Galco was backordered for a long time on one made to fit a USP Compact like the one I bought for my Springfield.

Go to kramerleather.com and look at Greg' Kramer's wares. I own 7 of them and can hide a 1911 or 4" 629 under a polo short.

I have a Tucker Silent Thunder and Tucker pancake for my M&P 9c and my Kimber Ultra Carry. I like both holsters very much. Both are comfortable and secure the gun well while allowing for a quick draw. I have used the Silent Thunder for IDPA Bug matches with great success.
