1909 - Glenn Curtis won the first widely recognized air race in Rheims, France.

1949 - The USSR tested its first atomic bomb, launching the nuclear arms race.

1957 - Senator Strom Thurmond of South Carolina ended the longest filibuster in Senate history after talking for 24 hours and 18 minutes straight.

Shouldn't that 1949 entry be the first hydrogen bomb or thermonuclear bomb?

I associate "atomic bomb" with U-235, two of which were "dropped in anger" in August 1945.

The Soviets exploded their first fission bomb in 1949. What I meant by "launching the nuclear arms race" was that after the first Soviet test, both sides felt compelled to outdo one another.

The first Soviet hydrogen bomb was in 1953.

Looked right at "USSR", but my brain processed "US". My bad.
