1774 - The First Continental Congress met in Philadelphia.

If any point in history can be pegged as the estabishment of the United States, IMHO, this was it. The delegates were still divided then on whether to declare independence or petition the king of England for redress. They decided to choose the latter course, that time.

1836 - Sam Houston was elected president of the Republic of Texas. He took office in October.

1945 - "Tokyo Rose" was arrested in Yokohama, Japan. She was later convicted of treason.

1972 - Palestinian "Black September" terrorists killed 11 Israeli athletes at the Munich Summer Olympics.

1975 - Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme, a devotée of Charles Manson, made a futile attempt on the life of President Ford. She was convicted and sentenced to prison. She was paroled a couple of weeks ago (this year).

1977 - The U.S. launched Voyager 1, a couple of weeks after launching Voyager 2. :headscratch
