Pennsylvania Man Accidentally Fires Cannonball Into Neighbor's House
Friday, September 04, 2009

UNIONTOWN, Pa. — A Pennsylvania history buff who recreates firearms from old wars accidentally fired a 2-pound cannonball through the wall of his neighbor's home.

Fifty-four-year-old William Maser fired a cannonball Wednesday evening outside his home in Georges Township that ricocheted and hit a house 400 yards away.

The cannonball, about two inches in diameter, smashed through a window and a wall before landing in a closet. Authorities say nobody was hurt.

State police charged Maser with reckless endangerment, criminal mischief and disorderly conduct.

No one answered the phone Friday at Maser's home. He tells WPXI-TV recreating 19th century cannons is a longtime hobby. He says he is sorry and he will stop shooting them on his property, about 35 miles southeast of Pittsburgh.

He should be charged with attempted homicide of a house.

How can you accidentally shoot someone's house with a cannon? Unless the ignition charge was lit by spontaneous combustion!

my neighbor owns a machine shop . he machined a beautiful solid brass cannon .
it fires 2 inch steel balls that he also makes .

every new years and July 4th , he brings it out to the street and fires it .
he doesn't use the balls in the neighborhood . we pack it with wadding .

when that thing goes off , you can feel the ground quake under your feet .
one year we put a couple of extra scoops of powder in it
and we thought we broke the windows of the nearby houses just from the percussion .

luckily they just rattled .

I believe the "accidentally" part is covered by the "ricocheted" part. I'd bet he never figured that a canon ball would bounce. :thumbs2:

Would like to have somewhere I could shoot such a beast just for grins. :txflag: :fire

Full voice recordings of the event have been recovered. One man can clearly be heard saying "hold my beer and watch this!" immediately followed by a boom and rattling windows, USA1 reported. DoubleJ can be heard saying something about the fun...
