1776 - This is one of several dates upon which the Continental Congress may have adopted the name United States to replace the earlier United Colonies.
1850 - California became the 31st state.
1893 - Frances Cleveland, wife of President Grover Cleveland and the youngest First Lady in history (age 21), gave birth to a daughter, Esther. Esther was the first child of a president born in the White House, and one of very few children born to a sitting president.
1926 - The National Broadcasting Company (NBC) was founded.
1942 - A Japanese submarine launched a small seaplane that dropped incendiary bombs on Mount Emily in Oregon, starting multiple forest fires. It was the first enemy bombing in the continental U.S. during WW II.

It's kinda funny some of the things you don't hear about in history class. Didn't know anything about the Japanese dropping incendiary bombs in the states.

Few countries teach about their losses in history classes. That said, there were only a few incidents of Japanese fire-bombing of the U.S. mainland, and they didn't cause much damage. They also used balloons:

I got home and asked my wife if she had ever heard of the Japanese using incendiary bombs in the states and she asked me the same thing, "Why don't they tell you this stuff in history class?"
