The American Flag

This morning (9/11/2009), I felt the need to fly my American flag at half mast. On my way to work I noticed every flag I passes was not at half mast. Am I practicing poor flag etiquette? I must be missing something.

Flying the flag at half-staff (or half-mast on a ship) is correct on September 11. Google "Patriot Day."

Thank you seamusTX. I have done so. Also I just noticed that my VFW calendar has this date noted as “Patriot Day” and also noted as to the flag at half mast. I know you live in Galveston. I work on Broadway. If you get out today take note of the flags at the POST OFFICE and the COURT HOUSE. You would think they would know better.

Post Office has to follow an official calendar for Holidays, or receive a notice to fly the flag at half-mast. I have seen Post Masters take this upon themselves in smaller towns.

You said your VFW calendar marks 9/11 as Patriot Day.

In Massachusetts, Patriot's Day is April 19, the day "the shot heard round the world"
was fired, and which is considered the official start of the American Revolution.

The battle site still exists today looking much as it looked in 1775.

That is Patriot's Day. Today is Patriot Day. Two different things.
