1776 - British troops occupied New York City.

1789 - The Department of State was formed under the newly ratified Constitution, replacing the Deparment of Foreign Affairs.

1935 - The Nuremberg Laws deprived Jews and other "non-Germans" in Germany of their citizenship and other rights,

1940 - The British Royal Air Force began to turn the tide in the Battle of Britain.

1963 - Four black girls were killed when a bomb went off during Sunday services at 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama. Other fires, shooting, and rioting followed.
