1780 - Benedict Arnold, turncoat commander of West Point, gave the British plans to the fort.
1884 - the Pennsylvania Packet or General Advertiser became the first daily newspaper published in the U.S.
1893 - Charles and Frank Duryea drove the first gasoline-powered automobile built in the U.S.
They were also the first to sell U.S.-made automobiles commercially. Their vehicle was very much a "horseless carriage" and was not a market success.
1897 - The New York Sun ran the famous "Is there a Santa Claus?" editorial.
1937 - The Hobbit was first published in the U.K.
1938 - A hurricane killed more than 600 people and caused widespread damage in New York and New England.
1981 - Sandra Day O'Connor took her seat on the Supreme Court.
Justice O'Connor was electged to office in Arizona as a Republican and appointed by President Reagan. Her nomination was approved by a near-unanimous vote in the Senate.
1983 - During a press conference, Secretary of the Interior James Watt said of a commission in his department, "I have a black, a woman, two Jews and a cripple. And we have talent."
The incident ultimately led to his resignation.

President Obama said his Grandmother was your "typical white person." Sounds just as off color to me as James Watt's comments. Maybe Obama's comments will lead to his resignation.seamusTX wrote:1983 - During a press conference, Secretary of the Interior James Watt said of a commission in his department, "I have a black, a woman, two Jews and a cripple.
