Chambered MP40

Post by Mhoward »

I have had my license for a few years now and have been carrying a Springfield 1911 9mm. I decided to put that one up and start carrying my S&W MP40 Full Size. Since this one doesn't actaully have a safety on it I am kinda worried about any accidental discharges. I wear it IWB on the small of my back, I think the only thing that would make me nervous would be carry one in the pipe while getting in and out of the truck. I do have a trigger guard on my holster buy I dont' want to end up with an extra hole back there. Anyone have any idea on how to get more comfortable with it? I have been leaving it cocked with the chamber empty, then checking it at the end of the day to make sure the firing pin didn't slip. Anyone else carry a MP? Holster suggestions?

Pistols are designed to be carried with a round in the chamber.

This video made me wonder. I took mine apart and noticed the same thing, real sensitive.

put a snap cap in the chamber (or leave it empty), cock the striker, put it in the holster (either leave the mag out, or put an empty one in), and then try to get the striker to "fire" while in the holster.

if you can, get a new holster, if not (and you probably won't be able to), this may help ease your mind. really, the only thing that helped me was doing it. load it up, and try to forget about it.
FWIW, IIRC, AFAIK, FTMP, IANAL. YMMV.

I carry my M&P 40 in a Don Hume 721OT OWB strong side with 15+1 loaded. I am not a fan of SOB carry but, if the trigger is covered by the holster I don't see where you have a problem. Any firearm that is carried for protection that doesn't have a round in the chamber is just an expensive rock or club.

Oh. M And P 40. When I saw MP40 I thought we were talking submachine guns. Dang. My bad.

Modern self-defense pistols are meant and designed to be carried with one in the chamber. The owner's manual usually has (lawyeristic) statements about not loading the gun and not putting one in the chamber until you are ready to shoot. This is not contradictory to the design once you realize that as security conscience adult possessor of a CHL, you are ALWAYS ready to shoot if the need should arise.

Can't help with the M&P40, but In do have some thoughts on SOB carry. My concern with SOB is that you can't see what your doing when you reholster the gun, and SOB can be uncomfortable while driving.

I do sometimes carry a 92fs SOB, in an el cheapo Uncle Mike holster. I don't holster the gun while the holster is in place but always place the holster and gun back there as unit. While this handgun does have a thumb activated safety, I understand that an accidental discharge while holstering would like cripple me for life. SOB carry is a verry comfotble and easy way to carry if one is doing a lot of activity, and its the easiest way to hide a big gun.

Thats exactly what i had to do. Once i realized how difficult it was to even force a condition even similar to an ND, it really put my mind at ease.
