Supersonic transports were very controversial at the time. The sonic boom ultimately caused most countries to limit them to coastal airports, and their voracious fuel consumption, at a time when petroleum prices increased rapidly, meant that they would never be economical.
1986 - William Rehnquist was sworn in as the Chief Justice of the United States, and Antonin Scalia joined the Supreme Court as an associate justice.
