1789 - The newly organized U.S. War Department established a standing army -- the horror that all the founders wanted to avoid.
1829 - The London police set up shop in Scotland Yard.
Scotland Yard is the name of a street. It's near the Prime Minister's residence at #10 Downing Street and other seats of the British government. The coppers moved to other quarters decades ago, but the name remains as a synonym for the police detectives.
1936 - The first U.S. presidential campaign speeches were broadcast by radio.
1982 - Tylenol capsules intentionally contaminated with cyanide killed the first of seven victims in the Chicago area. The crime was never officially solved. The evidence against the likely suspect did not rise to the level of probable cause.
All the tamper-proof containers of medications and food that are common today trace back to this incident, which has become a case study in commercial disaster management.

Today is the 30th anniversary of the Tylenol poisoning incident.
It was quite shocking to those who lived in the Chicago area at the time (as I did). Most consumer products were not sealed, and everybody was looking sideways at everything from OTC medications to yogurt and cottage cheese.
No suspect has ever been identified. One man went to prison for extortion in connection with the incident, but he was not a suspect in the actual poisonings. Ted Kaczynski is currently a suspect, though his connection to the case is tangential.
