Must be 21 to buy "Black Rifles" at Academy
Must be 21 to buy "Black Rifles" at Academy
I stopped in Academy today to look around and noticed large tags hanging from all of the hi-cap rifles. Apparently Academy requires the buyer of such rifles to be 21 years old, but you can buy a bolt action in any caliber at 18....interesting.
Is this a company policy or a specific store that has decided to do this?

this has been discussed or similar has been discussed.
Texas law stipulates 21 for handguns and 18 for long rifles. It must be a store policy.
I'd move on to someplace else or get your dad to purchase it for you.

Company policy. It stinks but they have the right to go above and beyond the minimum requirements.
I bought a shotgun at Cabelas last week and even though I gave them my CHL, I still had to wait for them ti do a NCIS check. I was a bit perturbed by that. I have bought several gun since getting my CHL and have never had that happen.

I believe our friend is old enough to buy one, he is merely displeased with the policy.TDDude wrote:I'd move on to someplace else or get your dad to purchase it for you.
FWIW, IIRC, AFAIK, FTMP, IANAL. YMMV.

Interesting (regarding the NCIS check), next time, point out on the ATF Form 4473:
7. EXCEPTIONS TO NCIS CHECK (I believe it's still this number).

There again, their business, their right to go above and beyond minimum. Only reason I bough the gun there is that I had $180 worth of cards and rebates. Got the shotgun, side saddle carrier and 5 boxes of military buckshot for $350 out the door. Cabelas can be a great source, but often their prices are way over the top.
Recently, I spotted a knife I wanted and found it on the internet for almost half the cost of what Cabelas demanded. Plus, I paid no tax on it and they shipped it for less than $5.00.

Nice Remington Tactical. That is odd that they would still phone in NICS...must have been someone that was new.

I'm planning to send Academy a letter with the receipt from the Glock that I just bought to express my displeasure with their policy.

I agree . . . but perhaps they're beginning to understand this. I was looking at some Lugers in their "Gun Library" and noticed that a few sold after the price was reduced . . . by as much as 50% !!!Abraham wrote:Cabelas can be a great source, but often their prices are way over the top.
I usually only shop there when they have some sort of coupon or "Cabela's Bucks" deal going . . . I recently bought an EOTECH and some .223 ammo; but I was able to use a $20 coupon I printed from their website, used up a couple of Cabela's Bucks, earned some more Cabela's Bucks . . . AND got a $150 gift card from the promotional stuff they sent me.
So now I have $160 in credits to use up this year . . . but exactly on what, I've yet to decide.

That's a daft policy to have. They're just cheating themselves out of sales.

I need to do that also. I bought two guns at the Ft Worth store a few weeks ago.KFP wrote:I'm planning to send Academy a letter with the receipt from the Glock that I just bought to express my displeasure with their policy.
I was not aware they were running a NICS check. I just assumed they would not, so I did not watch them.

I was told at Spectre Firearms that you still needed to fill out the forms for their own records. I don't recall them making the background check call.

This is true. You still have to fill out the form, the FFL just doesn't have to call to get approval with a current CHL.Purplehood wrote:I was told at Spectre Firearms that you still needed to fill out the forms for their own records. I don't recall them making the background check call.
