San Antonio: "Good Samaritan" killed in home invasion

Post by seamusTX »

I'm going to begin by saying that I dislike the way that the term "Good Samaritan" is misused nowadays. The Good Samaritan of the Bible made a significant sacrifice for a stranger -- he didn't just change a tire or lend someone an umbrella.

A San Antonio man apparently took in homeless people for extended periods. One of his guests apparently got crosswise with a criminal in a dispute over drugs.

The offended criminal came to the apartment and fatally shot the man. One of his other guests was also shot and is expected to survive. None of the residents had anything to do with the drug dispute.

Police have identified suspects but have not made arrests.

The location was the 8700 block of Datapoint. I don't have a clue about San Antonio neighborhoods outside the Riverwalk.

I have to admire the generosity of someone who will take in homeless strangers, but this is why I don't do it.

Datapoint Drive is in the northwest area of the city, right in the middle of the medical area (which seems to be San Antonio's major non-tourist industry) -- lots of hospitals and supporting businesses in that area, along with apartments and residences. If you say 'violent crime' or 'home invasion' I would not think of that area first. (However, Madalyn Murray O'Hare (or O'Hair) and her son and granddaughter came to their ends on the NW side too). No place is immune, of course, but most violent adventures seem to happen on the south side or east side of town. The North/Northwest/Northeast sides of San Antonio have exploded, building and population-wise, in the last 10 or 15 years, compared to the rest of the city.

I work on Datapoint @ Parkdale and this particular stretch of road is the pits. This story doesn't surprise me at all.

Wherever those kooks lived was going to be a bad neighborhood.

It was O'Hair. O'Hare is the big Chicago airport and a WW II hero: http://www.acepilots.com/usn_ohare.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Actually, they just died there. They lived in Austin (Keep Austin Weird!), at their atheist world scam operation HQ, or whatever they called it -- they were kidnapped by one of their employees and his buddies (ex-cons), held hostage in a motel on Fredricksburg Road just north of the I-10 in San Antonio, and eventually murdered. Their bodies were buried at a ranch outside of SA without the landowner's knowledge, IIRC, and the whole thing was a mystery until a newspaper guy followed up on it and eventually one of the killers 'fessed up as to where the bodies were. I think (and I may be wrong, it's been some years) this guy was already in prison for something, and made a deal to show the authorities where the bodies were.

I knew O'Hare was O'Hare and a hero, but couldn't remember if O'Hair was O'Hare or O'Hair. ;-)

p.s. also IIRC with out googling, O'Hare's dad was an accountant for gangsters...

OK. I did not live in Texas at that time and was way too busy with real life to follow that case. I just remembered that she disappeared under mysterious circumstances.

I knew a guy some years ago who was an atheist and went to work for the O'Hair organization, probably in the 1960s (I don't remember). He said she was the most disagreeable human being that he ever had he misfortune to meet.

Apparently, the Capone gang sent him for a dirt nap in revenge for giving the feds evidence. I don't know the facts of his involvement.
