going to Oregon.....

I understand that they are an open carry state, would you just not carry or would you go ahead and open carry.

First off, welcome to the forum progun147. :tiphat:

Your question is pretty general and would depend.

If you have a Texas CHL, I would carry concealed as we have reciprocity with Oregon. Remember you must follow their concealed handgun laws.

As for carrying openly, I personally would not for the most part. IANAL, but Oregon has preemption and allows cities and municipalities to prohibit open carry, so you might not be breaking state laws, but you might be breaking municipality laws or ordinances and be arrested. Now, if you are out in the open countryside, then maybe, but not in town or populated areas.

HI progun, and welcome to the forum! There's a lot of good information on this forum, and a ton of great people to help answer your questions. :tiphat:

I am not familiar with Oregon's gun laws at all, so sorry, but I can't answer your question. However I would say that If Oregon has an open carry law, that it may(stress may) be applicable to Oregon residents only. Like I say, I don't know their laws at all.

However, here's a link that may help answer your question:

Here is a link with a good summary of their laws concerning open carry http://opencarry.org/or.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Note that the exception for a CHL to carry in preempted cities (like Portland) usually means they can carry CONCEALED , but not open carry. Not 100% clear in their law, but that is usually the interpretation I have experienced in states where they have this scenario.

EDITED TO ADD:

I am not aware of any state that allows unlicensed open carry for only their residents. There are states where you must also have a CHL to carry openly, but that would only prohibit you from carrying if that state doesn't accept any your license.

Keith, are you sure of this? It is my understanding that Oregon honors NO other CHL but will issue non-resident licenses to the residents of the four contiguous states. See Handgunlaw.us

FWIW, we never saw anyone carrying openly when we went up the Oregon coast and Columbia River Gorge in August.

Sorry, my bad guys. Was thinking of Idaho, not Oregon on recipriocity. Yes, you are correct that Oregon doesn't honor other state's licenses. :oops:

Still goes for the open carry, that I would not in a populated area.
