They should make the renewal dates longer because of wait times and NOT expire on our birthdays. It's not our fault they can't get them procesed in a timely manner!! Just got my renewal letter in the mail

I live in League City and all they keep saying is they are waiting on a background check. I guess it IS time to start contacting my representatives. Who all do you think I should contact first?

I'd say your State Congressman first. Then your State Senator. Send an email AND call them. And if you have no response from them in a week, follow up with a second round of the same.
