All I can say is that ANY dog can be dangerous when their home is being broken into. They don't understand what a LEO is.
However, if they really did high-five afterwards, they should pay. Possibly with their jobs. IMHO Who's to say they wouldn't do the same with a person if they don't know they're being watched and before they realize they made a mistake. Who will do the investigation? Their own department? Anyone want to guess the outcome?
I am not and have never been a LEO. My avatar is in honor of my friend, Dallas Police Sargent Michael Smith, who was murdered along with four other officers in Dallas on 7.7.2016.

Update to the later story: The black Labrador was the pet of the owner of an apartment house where police were serving a warrant on a tenant. It was not killed by the shooting. After spending over $7,000 on vet bills, the owners decided to put it down.

In this case, the city coughed up $7,600 for veterinary expenses and cremation of the dog's body after it was euthanized:

No one needs to shoot animals except for hunting. We're smarter than they are. This is just mindless, fearful carnage.

You ever been bit by a Doxon? They got the jaws of a pitbull, so I wouldnt have advised the officer to try and pick the dog up, but a 11 year old Doxon (Basically a senior citzen as far as that breed of dog goes) is hardly a threat, he could have kicked, tazed, or maced the dog to make it go away.

Anyone remember that SWAT team that shot like 4 dogs in one month mistaken home raids, and were finally shutdown after they raided the mayors house and shot his dog?

 I'm not quite sure what to do with this. I can't tell if you're serious or joking.

Intelligence is how we keep from getting into a compromising or dangerous situation, but sometimes things just happen. I had a mail carrier several years ago get laid up for several months after a little bitty chihuahua bit the back of his ankle and damaged that tendon. When asked why he didn't use his pepper spray, he said he didn't think it would be necessary. Most LEO's are not dog trainers and don't know much about animal behavior. Even the K9 officers. They know about their dog, but most of the one's I've known are poor trainers. They have to keep taking their dogs to the trainers to fix undesirable behavior. When a dog is coming at them they often don't have the time or ability to assess whether or not this dog is serious or bluffing.

Now, at the same time most pet owners don't think their dog would hurt anyone. Most won't , but this is an animal with their own minds. They will always do things that we thought they would never do and always at the wrong time. If a dog perceives the LEO as a threat he doesn't care what kind of clothes he or she has on or that they have a badge. Now it's just a matter of how big a threat does that dog perceive the LEO to be. If it's big enough it's go time and if a human can cover 20 in about 2 seconds how much time do you thin you have with a dog intent on stopping you from 20-30 feet? This will be a split second decision.

I am a HUGE dog lover, but also believe in owner responsibility. However, LEO's are humans and they will make mistakes. But, I don't want to give them a free pass either.

I'm as serious as a stroke.

In most of the cases that I have cited in this thread, there was no need to shoot the dog. The dog just frightened or annoyed the officer. Shooting dogs is becoming S.O.P. in some departments.

We can't act on the basis of what people or animals might do. Anyone who isn't quadriplegic or in a coma can be a killer. We have to act when and to the degree that it is immediately necessary to avoid harm.

If a gangster or lunatic sics a fighting dog on the cops, sure, the cops have to defend themselves.

The dog attacked the guy, and was obviously not being controlled by the owner as can be seen by this quote from the article:
He just kind of walked up and down the neighborhood and didn't bother anybody
I have no problems with the officer shooting the dog.
I'm not attacking you, but
If you were walking outside, as a citizen, and a Doxon approached you and did what it did to the cop, would you shoot it? Because I bet you could kiss your CHL goodbye, and would be paying quite a pretty penny in Civil court.
Quick its coming right at you! :fire "rlol"

Oh, Dachshund!

Yes. These can be one mean little dog. There were bread to go into a badger hole and flush them out.

However, their rather football-like shape and inability to reach anything higher than the kneecaps of the typical adult makes them prime candidates for a field goal attempt rather than wasting ammo.

Yeah, but IF you were laying on the ground, and they chewed on your neck for awhile, they MIGHT pull out your jugular vein, and that could kill you!! "rlol"
