OKLAHOMA CITY – A pawnshop owner was killed Saturday night when one of the guns a man was trying to pawn accidentally discharged, police said.

The victim, whose name had not been released by late Sunday, was inspecting several guns at Freedom Pawn when one of them went off.

Officers said they are not sure why the gun was loaded.

Unbelievable. My wife works with a lady whose husband works for one of the largest pawnshops in the nation in their firearms disposal unit. (no they don't destroy them, they sell them on auctionarms.com).

Last week she was telling me that the husband received in a shipment of guns from their branches, and while inventorying them, came across one that the mag was fully loaded with a round in the chamber. Needless to say that branch manager was fired on the spot, with prejudice.

If the employee was looking for a serial number, the owner of the weapon was probably still in the store.

How many mistakes occurred here?

1. Rifle owner carrying around a loaded rifle...
2. with the safety off
3. Store owner allowing the guy to enter the store without the action being open
4. Employee not checking the weapon when he took it
5. Muzzle not pointed in a safe direction
6. Finger on trigger

Police on Sunday identified the man who was accidentally shot to death in a north Oklahoma City pawn shop Saturday afternoon as owner Jason Baggett, 32.
Baggett was shot once in the torso and died at the scene about 4:45 p.m. in Freedom Pawn, 7936 N MacArthur Blvd., said police Lt. Ron Bacy.
An employee of the shop was inspecting the gun for a serial number when Baggett stepped in front of the barrel of the gun. The gun, which was thought to be unloaded, fired once and hit the man, Bacy said.

I didn't see anything about a customer/witness in the story linked in the OP. Sorry if I missed something.

A person pawning a gun has to fill out a form 4473, and no FFL is going to take a firearm that has no serial number, unless it is a genuine antique.

That's why I said the customer must still have been there, waiting to get the paperwork done.
