Shooting a Rifleman's score is definitely a challenge and although there are exceptions, there aren't many who can just go out and do it on their first weekend. I certainly didn't even come close my first time out, so it can be a little humbling.
I'd suggest starting with a .22lr just to save on ammo costs, but bring a centerfire as well if you qualify for full distance. As suggested earlier, tube fed 22s are just fine, but whatever you bring, have it rigged up with swivels and a 1.25" gi web sling before you go. All the trigger time on the 22 will relate directly to your centerfire and you've saved a bundle.No matter how much experience you have, if you bring a teachable attitude with you, chances are you will learn a lot.
I've taken my 10 year old daughter before and although she didn't shoot that well, she had a great time. The instructors we very accommodating and encouraging to her. I can't recommend the program enough.
