This day in history - November 14

Post by seamusTX »

1851 - Moby-Dick was published.

1889 - New York newspaper reporter Nellie Bly, a pseudonym for Elizabeth Cochrane, set out to beat the fictional goal set by Jules Verne's Around the World in Eighty Days. She made it in 72 days and a few hours, setting a record.

Unlike some circumnavigators, she did not cheat by following a northerly route. She covered the entire 25,000 miles.

1922 - The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) began [drum roll please] broadcasting.

1940 - The Nazis bombed the British town of Coventry, which had no military or industrial value.

Bombings of this sort, intended to terrorize, hardened the resolve of the British to utterly defeat the Nazis.

1969 - Apollo 12 was launched, the second successful moon landing mission.

This image of the Apollo 12 lunar module was taken from the command module by astronaut Richard Gordon shortly after separation. The lunar module is 110 km above the surface highlands. The large crater in the left foreground is the 164 km diameter Ptolemaeus, centered at 9.3 S, 1.9 W. Herschel crater, 40 km in diameter, is at the right, centered at 5.7 S, 2.1 W. The image is looking to the west. Gordon is just beginning his 38 hours of solo orbits around the Moon in the command module while Charles Conrad and Alan Bean explore the surface.
