Another thread inspired me to conduct this poll.
I vote for the 3rd option as the election of Obama spurred me into buying my AR-15. The others never really occurred to me.
Why are gun sales on the rise in the US?

A little bit of everything. I took my CHL class and bought my first pistol before Obumble got elected and ammo was still in relatively good supply and at decent prices. We drive to Atlanta a couple times a year and all states we travel through honor the Texas CHL. I basically carry 24/7 now except at work
which is a "gun free" zone.
Plus guns and ammo aren't getting any cheaper - the 92FS I bought a little over a year ago is now 10% higher.

I voted RKBA, and I do think that is a large part of it, but what has personally fueled my decisions is a growing distrust of the federal government on the whole. I don't dislike government and I'm quite happy with the system as designed, but I believe there is an inordinately large misrepresentation of interests at the root of our problems. I think the lack of trust in our government is healthy, and part of the design where the authority comes from the people who are supposed to be both the main benefactors and guardians of our constitutional republic.
All I see is a growing corporate oligarchy born on the back of apathy and distractions, irrespective of polical party. I like to think more people are seeing that now, but I suspect as the recession fades into memory, so too will the dust settle on the firearms owned by millions of Americans; and the slow erosion of liberties will continue on unnoticed and uncontested. doubleplusungood

My wife and I were coming back from the rodeo - on Hwy 90. I am in center lane - 65 MPH Cruise On. We had been there all day - 7 hours and on the way home. Talking about the day. Traffic was minor. Easy to pass at 11:30 pm (after the concert).
Get almost to the 151 cutoff - I am in that lane. About half way down the 1/2 mile approach - I see them coming. A weave around this car to the far left lane and immediately cut back far right to the 151 cutoff. Coming fast. I move to the middle lane under the 151 to 90 exchange. The far right lane exits not 1/8th mile ahead. I am still at 65 (even thought the exit is listed at 45...I do it every day).
As we round the corner, a slower car is in the left lane. As they are approaching quickly behind us, I punch it to make a hole...that they used to get around the guy. I let off the accelerator and slowed back to 65 - they zoomed on...then seemed to get closer. And closer... I passed them, still on cruise and in the right lane. They got behind us. I continued down to the SeaWorld cutoff and, instead of turning toward the house, I turned toward the McDonald's (Rudy's on the corner).
I pulled into the McDonald's parking lot, into the lights and cameras, and parked in the middle of the drive. He stayed back about 150 feet. We sat like that about 15 seconds and he drove off. We waited about 10 more seconds and went inside for ice cream.
Elsie Pea's brother - P90 was in the truck as always. Hadn't needed little sister yet. Ya just never know...

I think that the 2008 election results and the ongoing attacks on 2A rights are the biggest reasons for national numbers being at an all-time high, but I know that in Houston, crime is also a major problem. Slice it how you want to, but crime went up substantially during and after Katrina, and hasn't dropped much (if any) since then. With the economy tanking as of late, I know that there has been a very notable increase in residential robbery, which has prompted several of my neighbors to arm themselves, and some to go get their CHL.
