Need input on Holsters for S&W J frame

Post by HOSSISFREE »

I just picked up a S&W 438 .38 special +p. It's my first ever wheel gun, and would like some experienced revolver carriers to give me their .02 on holster options. Any input is appreciated.

I have already switched to a Pachmayr grip because the original was just too small for my big hands. Improved fit and accuracy.

I carry Mrs. Oldgringo's S&W 638 car gun in a pocket holster...when she'll let me.

I'm pretty happy with a Dillon precision (Mitch Rosen) OWB holster.

I use a Mika pocket holster for my 642 and have been quite pleased with it.

95% of the time my 638 goes in a DeSantis Nemisis pocket holster (model is actually intended for the Kahr PM semi-auto I used to carry, but J-frame carries in and draws well from it and it's smaller than the Nemisis designed for J-frame and fits my pockets better).

For belt carry, High Noon Holsters Split Decision tuckable works well the few times I've needed it. If you plan to belt carry more often, one of their horse hide holsters would likely work even better.

Have also heard good things about Mikas pocket holstrs for J-frames and Pocket Concealment System's "No See Em".

I use a holster from Ray's Holsters. Its leather, pancake, great quality, rides high and close and under $40. It is for OWB and I think it is made in South Africa. I have one for my 642 and sp101. Done Hume also makes some good inexpensive holsters.

Anyone know of any good leather cross draw holsters for J frames and a right hand shooter?

I can recommend the De Santis "Super Fly" pocket holster, which is ideal for my M38 J-Frame when I choose to carry it rather than something bigger. My typical attire is T-shirts and shorts. At times I forget it is there, but I know I can get to it quickly if needed. I particularly like the flap which insures your weapon does not "show" in your pocket.

I have a Desantis leather cross draw for my SW642 that I like. The name is something like Air Ops/Air Cops (can't remember). It has the 068/02 on the back. I think is was designed for LEO's that sit a lot ( (like federal air marshals). Good quality, works well and I think I paid around 60 bucks for it.

The Tucker Cover up is a good choice.

I carry mine in a Kramer paddle holster called the MSP (Michigan State Police) as their detective squad uses them. The paddle is leather too.
