DE: Injured police dog has a long road to recovery

Post by seamusTX »

In Wilmington, Delaware, last week, a Malinois police dog named Diablo pinned a suspect. The dog was shot in a gunfight between the suspect and police.

Diablo is recovering at the University of Pennsylvania veterinary hospital, possibly the best veterinary hospital east of the Mississippi River (Texas A&M is the best in the west, and that is no joke -- I've been there).

The suspect is also recovering -- in jail.

Diablo's condition is improving, but he is still in ICU [sic].

BTW, this is the veterinary hospital where the famous injured thoroughbred Barbaro was treated a while back.

I hope Diablo recovers and can get back to duty with his partner.

His leg injury may force him into early retirement. Even after being shot at least twice he did not let go until the release command was given and then he returned to his handlers side before collapsing. Brave dog!!! :tiphat:

Diablo was released from the hospital today. It is uncertain whether he will be able to return to duty.

I'm glad to hear he is getting better. It sounds like he still has a long road ahead of him. Thanks for the update!
