-realizing the thread got pretty bent here, I just thought I could share with the youngsters what I remember as my fathers first modem.
It was a briefcase contained unit, and to use it you would set your "old school" phone receiver (the part you hold up to your head) into a cradle in the case.
I thought my dad was James Bond.

Wasn't that Robert Heinlein from "Time Enough for Love"? He also wrote, "Always keep your clothes and weapons where you can find them in the dark."

The usual attribution is Beyond This Horizon, but similar themes pervade Heinlein's works.

My point of disagreement is that you can find so many counterexamples, like Somalia and Afghanistan.

IMHO, the truth is that a civilized society is built on a moral foundation and rule of law. In that case, people are polite regardless of how they may be armed.

Great advice.

I also think it's a good idea to keep a flashlight where you can find it in the dark, though I can see the advantage to not drawing attention to yourself.
