AR-15 Help: Trigger Guard

Post by karl »

Hello, just "finished" assembling my stripped lower this afternoon but ran into a problem: my trigger guard pin is stuck. Everything I have is mil-spec from Spike's Tactical and I'd noticed that some pieces were feeling a little tight through the whole assembly. Now I have the pin stuck half way and I'm not sure how to proceed.

First things first: punch out the pin in reverse and reclaim my lower. Next what should I do? All the holes are lined up and I am CERTAIN the problem is not hole alignment, since the pin is stuck in the middle of the TG shaft. I've used some lube to no avail.

Suggestions? Thanks.

Good idea, I'll give that a try.

Tread very carefully, if you force it you could break off the little ears on the receiver.

The pin you are using should be a roll pin which are sometimes not so nice to deal with. Here's what I'd do...
1. Try a different roll pin if I had one, or
2. If you only have the one that came in a kit, squeeze the snot out of it with pliers to "resize" it, dress any burrs with a small file or stone, and see how she fits. Repeat until she slides right in.

Rule 1. of WECSOG (Wile E Coyote School of Gunsmithing): Always "work on" or "modify" the cheapest part to replace in case you bugger it up; in this case the roll pin.

Roll pins are available at most hardware and auto supply stores. Go to a "real" hardware store not a home center they should have a selection.

how are you trying to insert it? The vise idea is a good one as it will provide linear pressure. Just be sure to support the receiver so you dont break those ears off. Its not a deal breaker if you do but will look ugly. I usually press mine in with big channellocks but I have done enough to know how to hold it steady. Dont bang it in whatever else you do, will break for sure.

Success! The vice worked wonders; the pin was creaking the entire way in. I had good support so no broken ears. Thanks for all the help.

I use parallel-jaw pliers on mine.

vice grips on all AR roll pins here. found it's the quickest and easiest way for me. no hammer and no bench required. Can do it sitting in a comfy lounger :-)

What LPK are you using? If it's DPMS, aside from being low end, their roll pins are typically out of spec (i.e. slightly too large) from my experience.

Usually start 'em with vice grips as well. Though I'll often be able to just smack the trigger guard roll pin in with a hammer and appropriate punch without any problem. Stick a notepad or part of a phonebook on the back side of "ears" if you're worried about breaking 'em off.
