Sounds like a single sad man holed up in a church on Saturday rather than hostage situation.

Apparently he had held his wife as a hostage but she escaped.

Because there are bad people in this world that think nothing of doing bad things in churches. Be it a situation like this one was or like many of the others that occur. Just run a Google search for church shootings, there are a number of them.
