Carrying at school?

I think it might be a worthwhile pursuit for the legislative agenda Chas. I have always felt that a campus can be a very dangerous place at night, and many people have night classes. Even during the day, things can happen.

On 9/21/1993 at 9:00 p.m. in Mesquite, Braziel approached a newlywed couple walking on a jogging trail of a community college. Braziel demanded money. When it was discovered that neither of the two had any money in their possession, Braziel shot the 27 year old white male, resulting in his death. Braziel then sexually assaulted the 23 year old white female. Braziel linked to the crime in January 2001 when his DNA was found to match the DNA taken from the female victim.

Yeah - I'm all for it as long as securing it in the room is good to go as well.

We have had a few "Campus security" incidents in which a male was stalking, following females at night.

We are unique in the sense that we make the Corps of cadets provde an escort service 24/7 during the semester so that any girl leaving the library late at night can have a male in uniform escort her back to her dorm, or to/from parking lot.

However, I would love for the ladies to be able to carry a well placed Desert Eagle just to teach JA's like that a lesson.

I feel your pains (to some degree), I'm a student at Texas A&M, where this no carry law. Even on the busses. UPD (University police) informed me that I could leave it in my vehicle, even in a garage, and I could carry outside bldgs, but I couldn't go inside any bldgs (which they are correct).

I wish I had a better feel for how many people are effected by the current state of the law regarding on-campus carry at universities. Perhaps this is something we should add to the TSRA 2007 Legislative Agenda. Mschadt raises an excellent point about the problem of on-campus car burglaries at many colleges and universities. This point could be used to counter the argument that the students can simply leave the guns in their cars.

The biggest problem changing this would be the legitimate concern many will have about guns in dorms. Animal House is going to be the first thing people think about, even if the movie was set in a frat. house rather than a dorm. I know some states allow guns on campus at colleges and universities, but this would be a hard sell in Austin. Let me scratch my head and visit with some folks on this one.

Im glad he brought this up. My son worked for the campus police at SHSU when he was going to school there. He said most colleges offer escort service but it is rarely used. Probably because students dont know about it.

Also, I believe walking on campus at night is about the most dangerous place I go. I am always on high alert there.

About midway through my studies at Redneck Tech --oops, sorry, "Arkansas Tech University"-- c.1981-1985, they installed "safety lights" at the women's dorms. Because the dorms were locked at a certain hour, a woman needing in could press a button on a pole, and blue flashing light would activate. Campus security making rounds would see this light on their next round, and would use their key to let the student into her dorm. Whenever that might happen to be.

We called them the "rape-me whoopie lights". "Here I am, all alone, locked out of my dorm late at night!" To their credit, lady students had better sense than to use them. They could walk to a men's dorm, knock on a random door, and have better odds of finding a safe place to spend the night.

I work at the District Service Center which is adjacent to Eastfield College(one of the colleges in my district that I service). One of the first welcoming comments was "yea, some guy got killed over on the jogging trail, great neighborhood......". They still talk about it quite frequently as I was just hired in March.

I also service El Centro College in downtown Dallas, and Bill J Priest which is in the GHETTO. I'm on call 24/7 as a network admin.

Do I get to carry? Only my pocket knife.....

Yes, I'm the Vice Chairman of the TSRA Legislative Committee. The agenda doesn't get set until the November meeting. Prior to that, we gather information, evaluate support on various issues and proposed bills (ours and our opponents), communicate with and evaluate potential bill sponsors and try to develop a priority list. Then shortly before the November meeting, I draft my personal Proposed Agenda and present it at the meeting where it is discussed along with those of other committee members.

Thanks for the information. I am applying to a few schools in Texas and bringing the guns was a concern. My current school in IL has a place to store guns but I suspect that not all schools will.

Does anyone know if U of Texas at Austin or Texas AM at College Station have gun storage for students who live on campus?

I'm a student at A&M, but I never lived in the on-campus dorms, so I can't give you an answer yet. I'll try to look on the A&M website (http://www.tamu.edu) and see what I can find.
