Mailed & Waiting

Post by seniorshooteress »

Hi everyone :hurry: I am a newbie here cause I just took my CHL Class 12-19-09 Mailed my stuff to the DPSs 12-21-09. I am now, after reading some of these posts, thinking I am kind of dumb cause I didn't think about getting a conformation of delivery receipt and I also sent a postal money order to pay my fee, so now I don't even have a cancelled check to see if/or when my packet was received. I did however, send it priority. I have noticed others putting in their dates of classe, mailing, received by DPS etc. Guess I will be short a few of these dates. :lol: My instructor told me of this forum and said to visit often, which I intend on doing. This is probably not the right place to mention this, but, I am sure wearing out my fingers calling places trying to find 380 ammo. Maybe a Bersa Thunder wasn't my best choice, huh?

Hi seniorshooteress, welcome to the forum! :tiphat: A Bersa Thunder is a great carry gun. I too carry a .380, and in the same boat as you......trying to find ammo for it. :???:

Range ammo is almost non-existant, but places do carry self defense ammo, albeit it's expensiveeeeeeee! :lol: Wal-Mart, Academy, Bass Pro, Cabela's, and a local gun store in Ft.Worth are the one's I call. When you call, be sure and call early in the morning:
Wal-Mart at 7:30am
Academy at 8:30
Bass Pro & Cabela's at 9am sharp
gun stores - just before they open

That's the only way I've been able to find ammo. But hang in there, ammo shortage seems to be easing somewhat. ;-)

Thank you for the warm welcome to the forum. I live in Texas City area. I am lucky enough to have a shooting range pretty close. All I need now is ammo. :lol: Thx for the info on what time to be calling the stores.

Welcome seniorshooteress!

From the "ess", I am going to step out on a limb here and take it that you are female? If so, do be sure to check in with the "Ladies" section of this forum. If you aren't of the female persuasion, I apologize profusely and hope it makes you feel better if I tell you that someone thought I was a guy until USA1 bailed me out. :lol:

Welcome to the forum and the time will pass quick.
Couple of things you should be thinking about right now...and always follow the 10 commandments of Gun Safety!
http://www.thegunzone.com/ten-rules.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
1. Type of carry gun and holster. If possible get them now and practice carrying around the house. When I say practice I mean...holster location/position (and break in if leather) and range time with your new weapon. Get used to your rig.
2. Clean your equipment and get familiar with your gun. Loading and changing magazines/(or speed loaders if a revolver) is always good. Practice with empty magazines and pistol/revolver of course. Get your gun cleaning supplies....ammo storage boxes etc.
3. This may sound strange but you need to train anybody you live with or frequent visitors( Family/people you trust)... Make them aware of your status as a CHL and your weapons. Use your own discretion here. My family knows where my guns are and my "rules". Your rules may vary but something along the line of where your guns/ammo are/locks/keys and educate them in the commandments of gun safety....We all have read about the visitors/children who 'found" a gun and tragedy happened....it seems they phrase " we didnt know he/she had a gun always seems to present....
4. As for ammo.....I use the internet..... some really good places that are not price gouging (as bad as some) and have a really good supply are here....
http://alamoammo.com/cart/pistol-ammuni ... 771b761fa3" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
http://www.ammunitiontogo.com/catalog1/ ... point-ammo" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Other than that...welcome...I didnt return receipt my app either and all went well.....seems TDC is moving things along much much quicker than earlier this year......

Thanks Sarge; sounds like some sound advice. I found some target ammo (.380FMJ) at a local gun/ammo shop. I intend on going to the local shooting range as often as possible while in wait mode & also after I get my CHL. Hadn't thought about a holster or the practice of carrying around the house. Any suggestions on what kind of holster would be best for a newbie and a good location to carry. Definutely not going to carry in my purse. What about a holster that sits on my waist/back side? I wear rather form fitting clothes may have to change my style of dress once I get my CHL. Maybe an ankle holster would be my best bet? Suggestions are most welcome from anyone on this topic.

What holster is a long book to read :)
At I am at a significant disadvantage here....being a guy and all.....
But.......
If your going to wear a gun on your "hip" ....you want high and tight.....paddle holsters do well....
But after many many different carry setups I have settled on the Yaqi holster..... http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m ... _90529089/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Couple of reasons....I do carry different guns....and I have two Yaqui holsters that securely and comfortably carry any of them....
http://www.google.com/products/catalog? ... ps-sellers" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

My wife carries her Springfield XD9 in one very well.....you may want to take a look...find somebody with a Yaqui and try it out....
